At our last law firm where we were both partners, we pioneered the concept of meeting clients at a place and time of their choosing – rather than sticking to conventional office hours. So Sarah will meet you in the evening, at weekends, or at your house if that's what you prefer.

We are not trying to make ourselves look like a bigger firm than we are. We don’t self-aggrandize with inflated titles like “Head of Accounts Department” or “Marketing Manager” – we know that at best these titles don’t fool anyone, and at worst they send the wrong message from a firm that wants to emphasize its personal approach to law.

The same goes for our web site. We want to keep it simple. We don't have animated pictures of sofas moving across the page - we are a law firm not a furniture warehouse.

The legal process requires a ridiculously large amount of typing; from filling in forms to writing attendance notes for each client encounter. Traditionally solicitors would dictate and a secretary would do the typing. That’s a high overhead for lawyers who want to remain small and personal. So rather than trying to type it all themselves, or dictate for someone else to type, Sarah uses an off the shelf speech recognition package; Dragon Naturally Speaking. This has greatly improved efficiency, leaving more time for what really matters – client care.

David and Sarah also make use of the integrated practice management and account package Osprey. This provides all the systems that a law firm needs and takes away the headaches of security and backups as these are handled centrally and professionally. These days this is trendily called "Cloud Computing" – which just means using fast broadband and remote servers to store data and deliver applications through a browser at home – as it’s been done in industry for nearly 60 years…
